Abstract

In this paper, I will study the references to musical themes in the
comedies of Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos, attempting to reveal some of
the multiple meanings that they take on and their possible uses in the
context of theatrical practices in Iberian Cortes of the 16th Century. I
will also describe some of the musical instruments mentioned in the
texts, explaining some of their symbolic meanings, as well as the social
status associated with the users.
