Abstract

This study analyses the linguistic practices of students at a rural school located in the Xálima Valley, within the Autonomous Community of Extremadura and bordering Portugal. In this specific setting, the study examines the social interactions between schoolchildren using their mother tongue, A Fala, and the dominant language, Spanish. To carry out the study, the sample comprises pupils from the state school, specifically 39 pre-school students and 101 primary school students. The approach is qualitative and employs ethnography to obtain information from both formal and informal educational contexts. The results reveal that the school reinforces the establishment of a standardised language, as a result of current educational policies. It also observes the resistance of educational actors to mechanisms of control and social oppression, as well as the influence of the media on processes of linguistic acculturation. The research concludes that at the Valverde del Fresno school there is an exceptional linguistic phenomenon, conditioned by the existence of certain mechanisms such as (self-)surveillance, (self-)discipline and standardisation.
