Abstract

This article looks into novels that depict historical events from a
child’s perspective. Herefore, two contemporary lusophone novels
from outside Europe are analyzed. The question is why complex topics
are presented by a narrative voice that is limited. For instance, we find
functions such as attributing innocence to the protagonist thus
increasing the dramatic hero’s fall, sidestepping censorship by
construing a supposedly naïve position, or the possibility of reading the
text as a parable on a country which either loses its innocence or is at
the onset of some sort of development. Furthermore, I will point out
narratological strategies that are used to make up for potential
limitations in this narrative situation.
