Abstract

Having made its entrance into the University in the mid-19th century,
Philology has served as a basis for what we refer to today as Literary
Studies” or “Linguistic Studies.” Each of these fields followed separate
and even divergent paths in conjuction with the tendency towards
academic specialization. Nonetheless, Philology has proven
remarkably resilient, namely by incorporating new technologies and
moving beyond the naïve positivism of its beginnings.
In their search for a new place in the Humanities and Social Sciences,
Literary and Linguistic Studies are in need of the factors of order and
credibility that a renewed Philology can inspire. This essay traces the
recent history of this process of adequation and reconversion.
