Abstract

This work, published in 1977, when José Saramago was already 55 years old, has a marked autobiographical character, as the author himself stated on more than one occasion, going so far as to say that “the reader does not read the novel, he reads the novelist". We will dedicate this work to attempting to show all the similarities and coincidences between life and this particular work of Saramago, and that is where, we think, its originality and contribution lies.
