Abstract

In the present essay, we analyze the first comic book adaptations
published in Portugal, based on novels by Jules Verne, and studied how
they have been conceived, if they (re)tell the story accurately and
whether the images convey the idea expressed in their original
illustrations. In the mid-20th century, the aim of adapting literary works
to comics was to attract the attention of younger readers. Hence, these
publishers adopted this strategy as a new way of dissemination Jules
Verne’s novels.
The first novel to be published by the two Publishers, Edinter from Porto
and Porto Editora, was Voyage au centre de la Terre [Journey to the
Center of the Earth], which is why we choose this work as the case study
of this essay.
