Abstract

It has long been recognised that teachers embrace the role of linguistic and cultural mediators, promoting students’ active development of linguistic and cultural skills, a practice that is re-inforced in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Eu-rope, 2001), in which is highlighted the contribution of linguistic mediation activities towards effective communicative competence. The present work is the result of a challenge posed to a group of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) students, level B1, who were invited to take on the role of linguistic mediators throughout the analysis of a folktale, with the aim of contributing to the development of a communicative competence. It is also presented the participants' assessment of the activities that were carried out in the classroom.
